Along the bridge we find the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau desert, the murky waters of the Pearl River delta that extend as far as the eye can see.

The bridge with a budget of 20 $ billions has an extension of 34 miles (54 kilometers), being the longest crossing bridge ever built. Guo Xinglin, deputy director and senior engineer of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority, is halfway there.

Due to open this summer, we will connect to a relatively small city on the Chinese Mainland with the Special Region of Hong Kong and Macau.

The bridge since it was first suggested in 2003, has aroused some controversy. The bridge is a symbol of the country’s growing geopolitical ambitions.

There are tensions between the continent, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and China still claiming territory in the South China Sea. The bridge can be seen as a physical manifestation of the Chinese leadership’s determination to exercise its regional influence.
