Ponders of France on Chinese FDI.

President Emmanuel Macron since his election, has been on a mission to improve the control of Chinese FDI in France. The issue is complicated to make without threatening investors.

In January 2018, during a visit to China, French finance minister Bruno Le Maire set the tone on Chinese investments in France. “France welcomes long-term investments from China,” he said, “but only after screening deals to ensure French assets are not looted.”

The reaction to the comments was a surprise in France and abroad. From a purely economic perspective, they seem to disagree with the open economy of French President Emmanuel Macron. But focusing more attention, we can see the position that the French government has taken towards Chinese investments in recent months.
